ETN News Agency reported on the 6th that Italian Prime Minister Meloni applied on Monday (5th) to the European Union Intellectual Property Office to register her voice as a trademark, aiming to prevent political smear campaigns using artificial intelligence-generated deepfake content.
Meloni submitted a 4-second audio recording to the Intellectual Property Office, in which she says in Italian, "Io sono Giorgia Meloni (I am Giorgia Meloni)."
In recent years, Meloni's likeness has been repeatedly used to generate deepfake images, including fake lingerie pornographic photos from two years ago; she eventually took legal action, and the case is still under trial. However, local media pointed out that even if Meloni's trademark application is approved, it would only provide an additional legal recourse, and still cannot automatically prevent her voice from being stolen by AI.
