Hang Seng Index opens 155 points higher at 23,941, mainland banks lead rebound in Hong Kong banks, OpenAI revenue revaluation drags down Zhipu and MiniMax

    ETONNEWS (September 9) - After yesterday's fall below 24,000, Hong Kong stocks rebounded slightly this morning, financial stocks rose, the Hang Seng Index opened at 23,941, up 155 points or 0.7%, with turnover of HK$7.748 billion on the main board. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index stood at 8,057, up 46 points or 0.6%. The Hang Seng Tech Index stood at 4,085, up 11 points or 0.3%.

    Externally, the Middle East situation remains tense, with increasing attacks on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and Yemen's Houthi militants attacking Saudi Arabia; coupled with Hurricane damage in the Gulf of Mexico potentially affecting regional oil supply, oil prices surged sharply, with New York crude futures rising more than 50%, although U.S. bond yields first rose then retreated, and the Dow found support at lower levels. However, reports indicated that OpenAI's annualized revenue by the end of September was only close to $5 billion, $2 billion lower than originally implied, dragging down Nasdaq performance.

    Mainland banks supported the market this morning, Agricultural Bank of China (01288) rose 2.21% to HK$6.58, ICBC (01398) rose 1.85% to HK$7.525, CCB (00939) rose 1.19% to HK$9.78, Bank of China (03988) rose 1.16% to HK$6.1.

    Hong Kong banks also rebounded, HSBC (00005) rose 1.12% to HK$144.2, Standard Chartered (02888) rose 0.73% to HK$219.6, Bank of China (Hong Kong) (02388) rose 0.91% to HK$48.92; AIA (01299) opened 1.81% higher at HK$70.5.

    OpenAI's annualized revenue is reportedly close to $5 billion, lower than some market estimates of nearly $7 billion. Large model twins declined, Zhipu (02513) fell 2.57% to HK$626.5, MiniMax (00100) fell 1.06% to HK$205, down for three consecutive days with a cumulative decline of 17.74%.

    Other tech and internet stocks opened narrowly higher, Alibaba (09988) rose 0.19% to HK$104.5, Baidu (09888) rose 0.49% to HK$82.55, Tencent (00700) rose 0.88% to HK$415, Meituan (03690) rose 0.29% to HK$69.6, Kuaishou (01024) rose 0.49% to HK$28.68, Xiaomi (01810) rose 0.76% to HK$23.84.

    Biotech blue chips showed mixed performance, Innovent Biologics (01801) opened 1.89% higher at HK$94.35, WuXi Biologics (02269) fell 1.2% to HK$53.45.

    WH Group (00288) rose 1.84% to HK$6.63, China Overseas (00688) opened 1.11% lower at HK$13.4. (ey)
