U.S. government accuses top 9 universities including Harvard and Stanford of fraudulently abusing J-1 visas to recruit overseas scholars

ETONNEWS special report on the 9th: After suspending Microsoft (US.MSFT) and several other technology companies from participating in the Permanent Labor Certification Program (PERM), the Trump administration in the United States has announced an investigation into well-known domestic universities' abuse of exchange visitor visas to recruit overseas scholars. Vice President Vance specifically highlighted that the abuse and fraud at nine top universities are particularly severe.

The universities named by Vance include Harvard University, Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Yale University, Brown University, University of Pittsburgh, California Institute of Technology, Arizona State University, and University of California, Davis.

Vance pointed out that this large-scale fraud investigation specifically targets J-1 visas, criticizing the aforementioned universities for using too many of these visas to 'suppress wages for American graduate students and American researchers.'

Anthony D'Esposito, Inspector General of the Department of Labor, stated that universities are bringing large numbers of Chinese nationals into PhD and researcher programs to save money, posing a threat to national security. (yc)
